Government Digital and Data: championing diversity, equity, and inclusion

Do you want to help reshape public services whilst contributing to a workplace that values inclusion? We need individuals who believe in diversity to deliver innovation and create meaningful tech and AI solutions.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion

At Government Digital and Data diversity is demonstrated as a core value supported by policy. We are committed to fostering an inclusive culture that celebrates individuality and empowers every team member to thrive. By know that by reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve we are building solutions that truly meet the needs of all citizens.

Our initiatives, including active DEI networks and mentorship programmes, ensure your voice is heard and your potential is maximised. Whether it’s through LGBT+ networks, Women in Digital, BAME Groups, or accessibility advocates, you will find spaces where you belong and can contribute to creating real social impact. You can read more about our networks here.

We also offer internship programmes to develop civil servants’s skills and create pathways for individuals from underrepresented communities to progress and thrive. One example is the 2024 Interns initiative that provides access to opportunities for diverse talent. We also partner with other departments to collectively recruit and promote gender and ethnic diversity in the tech field. Another example is the Civil Service Care Leavers Internship Scheme offering care leavers an 18-month paid job role in a central government department or agency. The Government Digital Service has also created the AI Accelerator Programme for upskilling some data scientists.

Our commitment to inclusion has been recognised, with HMRC being awarded the Best Public Sector Employer in Women in Tech Employer Awards 2022. We are continually working to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse environment within the Government, and we are always exploring new and innovative ways to strengthen our diversity and inclusion strategy.

“The Civil Service is happy to make reasonable adjustments. For example, at interview, I was asked in what format I would like the interview questions. I do not use Braille and use the same laptop as everyone else, but equipped with a speech synthesizer that ‘reads’ text on the screen.”
